William Coleman has made many appearances as a chamber musician and soloist, and as the violist of the acclaimed Berlin-based Kuss Quartet. His concert schedule has included concerts at the Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals, as well as at the Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall, Theatre du Chatelet Paris, Washington Library of Congress and Carnegie Hall.
William Coleman studied in Salzburg with Thomas Riebl and in Boston with Kim Kashkashian and at the same time in Budapest with the pianist Ferenc Rados. He has performed as chamber musician with some of the world’s finest musicians, including Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Yuri Bashmet, Miklos Perenyi, Clemens Hagen, Kim Kashkashian, Boris Pergamenschikov, Til Felner, Antje Weithaas and Leif Ove Andsnes, as well as extensive experience working directly with contemporary composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and György Kurtag.
He has been invited to give masterclasses worldwide, in the U.S., the Kronberg Academy, in Japan at the Suntory Academy, Tokyo, as well as recent return visits for concerts and masterclasses in Singapore and Australia.
The Kuss Quartet has recorded numerous recordings for Sony/BMG, Onyx, and ECM. In 2019 a new recording of the Weinberg Piano Quintet was released by SONY. In 2020 the complete Beethoven cycle will be released, Live from Suntory Hall in Tokyo. These were recorded on the famous “Paganini Quartet” of instruments, made by Antonio Stradivarius on generous loan by the Nippon Foundation.
He regularly attends the International Musicians’ Seminar Prussia Cove, and in 2020 will attend the prestigious Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, USA. He is Professor for Viola at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg and in 2019 replaces Yuri Bashmet on the jury of the International Lionel Tertis Competition on the Isle of Man. In 2021 he will be Jury-member of the Tokyo International Competition.
William Coleman plays on a Carlo Antonio Testore of 1735, once owned by the legendary violist Lionel Tertis.He is a Pirastro artist and plays exclusively Evah Pirazzi Gold strings.
